For a university campus, a torrential rainstorm can be both a flooding threat and a valuable source of water.
Facing increasingly frequent extreme rainfall, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has transformed the flood-prone Shenghou Motorcycle Parking Lot at Shengli Campus into a multifunctional rainwater management space. In collaboration with the Southern Region Water Resources Office, NCKU developed a rainwater harvesting and reuse system based on the concept of “turning flood risks into water resources.”
Rainwater collected from drainage channels, permeable pavement, and the rooftop of Sheng-Yi Dormitory is filtered and stored in a facility with a capacity of approximately 559.5 cubic meters. The reclaimed water is reused for toilet flushing and campus irrigation, while smart sensors and a cloud-based platform enable real-time monitoring and data-driven water management.
Since monitoring began on February 4, 2026, the system has reused 14,600.17 cubic meters of rainwater, demonstrating tangible benefits in flood mitigation and water conservation. By integrating water recycling, smart technology, and climate resilience, NCKU is turning sustainability into everyday campus practice and advancing toward a “Smart, Low-Carbon, Resilient, and Sustainable Campus.”
